DM'd 3e/3.5 for the first time last night - I haven't really been a DM since second edition, and it was kinda trippy.  We used the Pathfinder revisions, which made things simpler.  Feedback from my group was pretty much universally positive, and my own criticisms (such as that I need to speed up my combat and be more familiar with the monsters I throw at them) were pretty much countered as being 'not that much of a problem'.  So YEY.  I feel much more confident about running a campaign at school, which I think will be using the same campaign setting as the one I'm fooling around with at the moment.

Lemme tell you, it's fun as anything to put your PCs up against a group of ~~~GOODLY ADVENTURERS~~~.

--- whose identities they subsequently steal for their own nefarious purposes.

Soon enough I'm going to set them up against a group of Tucker's Kobolds.

That nice woman who's come to my register two or three times already is back from China, and apparently she had a wonderful trip.  The first thing she did when she came by the registers was go "OHAI HOW R U DOING" and remembered my name to boot.  She said she was in Tiananmen Square during the hottest day recorded in 156 years, which must've been absolutely insane.  She's so nice~. :3

And she said she'd bring me pictures.

THIS IS SO FRIENDLY.

She's the regional manager of either the Applebee's or the Chili's.  I<3her.  And I sold her the suitcase that got her to and from China.

The Player

You are most comfortable without close emotional relationships. It is very important to you to feel independent and self-sufficient, and you hate the idea of having to depend on others or having others depend on you. The very few times you have fallen in love, it was probably with someone unattainable and disinterested. You know how to have a good time with your friends, but when it comes time to bare your deeper feelings, you tend to laugh nervously and change the subject.

Fictional character with whom you might identify: Captain Jack Harkness (Doctor Who/Torchwood), Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany's)

Shoot 'Em Up
A little hollow in terms of plot, but its action scenes were pretty much unparalleled by anything else I've seen recently.  Clive Owen did a great job with a character that I found to be not entirely fleshed out enough, though his background seems to have been pretty adequately explained - only to be left ambiguous.  An interesting way to do things.  The end made me snicker, and though the plot twist was a bit predictable I enjoyed the execution of it.  This movie also wins for Most Badass Sex Scene Ever.  Not something to watch if you're looking for a brainy, thoughtful piece, but definitely excellent fodder for a good action movie to watch while hanging out with some friends - or alone, if you're bored.

Hairspray
I've seen it before, but I had to watch it again.  This movie always puts a smile on my face no matter my mood, and always has the side effect of making me want to ask my mother about her experiences during the 60s with discrimination.  She's always refused to talk about the student protests she was a part of, which I can understand, but one day I'd like to know.  An interesting tidbit about me is that I absolutely hated Hairspray when I saw it on Broadway, but have loved every non-Broadway production of it that I've seen.  Go figure.  Zac Efron actually looks decent in this movie, and his face doesn't bother me nearly as much.  This movie stands beside Chicago as one of the best theater-to-movie adaptations I've seen.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The first thing that stood out to me about this movie was the opening monologue.  Why?  Because it was well-written and easily-imagined, and gave an alternative look at the character of Jesse James.  I've never seen Casey Affleck act, but during his first scene in the film he established his character (as a whiny pansy bitch).  The way they played with lighting in the film was spectacular.  If you give it a watch, pay attention to how they shot the movie.
        "You talk good."
"You can hide things in vocabulary."

Rescue Dawn
Oh man, was this movie difficult to watch.  It was a great film, but they really didn't hold much back when it came to prisoner treatment.  The first while is torture-torture-torture, which leads into starvation-starvation-starvation.  Christian Bale gave an excellent performance, especially considering that for about half of the movie he was the only person in it.  The entire movie was very reminiscent of Empire of the Sun, which I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys war movies similar to this one.  I expected a good performance from Bale in this movie, and I was not disappointed.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

3:10 to Yuma
I have one thing to say, and that is: "Augh, The Ending."  Good movie, though.  Christian Bale and Russel Crowe provided an entertaining and intimate relationship between their characters.  The ending action scene was not entirely believable, but that can be overlooked thanks to the fact that it is, in all senses, a western.  It's supposed to be nearly supernatural in its combat silliness.

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
Emotional agony.  Not as bad as reading the book (of the same title and on which the film is based) simply because it only focuses on one specific set of events, but still.  I remain convinced that every 'proud American' should read the book, but failing that it wouldn't hurt if they saw a bit of this film.  HBO did a good job with the adaptation.  It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it was a good watch that I appreciated.  They did a great job with costume and set design.

The Thin Red Line

I hate people.  This is no secret to anyone (or at least it shouldn't be).  Examples follow.

1:  Yesterday.  Target.  I'm dropping something off at Guest Services, and I'm just in time to witness a woman coming up all in a huff with a broken car DVD player.  She starts getting in everyone's face, complaining that she's bought three of them - all of which have broken - and that we should FIX IT RIGHT NOW because it is OUR PRODUCT even though Target TOTALLY DOESN'T MANUFACTURE ELECTRONICS.  Her bitchiness escalated without provocation until:

"You had better be able to help me right now.  I mean it.  Because I swear to god, if my husband has to come in here, there'll be body bags."

What.

My supervisor, Tonji, offered to give this woman every phone number under the sun.  Apparently she has tried these phone numbers, and got nowhere.  So now it is supposed to be our problem, and we should deal with Corporate because her brat children broke a shiny toy.  Then: "I don't mean to be rude, but who is above you?"

Tonji smilesmilesmiled, then called Sarah up.  Pfftt.

2:  Hicks of white trash fame came to my register with two kids.  The girl was pleading to go to the library, and the toothless and filthy mother was all 'UM NO I DO NOT THINK SO, YOU'RE TOO FUCKING ANNOYING'.  Okay, so reading is bad.  Reading is not allowed.  She proceeded to bitch at both of her kids, with the father joining in, and then began to write out a check.

She got to 'Tar' and stopped.

And squinted.

And looked for anything around my register that could tell her how to spell Target.

She eventually ended up staring at the badge on my chest, and then proceeded to misspell the word 'twelve' as 'twelive'.

3:  The woman who was 'weirded out' because her total was a duplicate of how old Jesus was when he was killed.

Augh.

We got the replacement dog from Drake's breeder yesterday, the one who's supposed to take Darcy's place until Dallas has her litter.  This poor dog is so terrified of anything that moves on two legs, it's heartbreaking.  He's a big, goofy two-year old, and he's Drake's great-great-grand-nephew.  He moves exactly like Drake, he's just as big, and the upper half of his face and skull look exactly like Drake's, though he's got quite a lot more hair - and he's also not groomed.  His front feet are enormous; he's also not done growing.  Allison, his breeder, has kept him crated, and he's very neurotic.  She apparently boarded Cash with someone else for a while and he came back worse, and after two nights with this poor dog I'm completely convinced that someone physically beat him.  We have to corner him to get a hand on him, and he has literally jumped over couches - twice - to get away from us while we were doing so.  We had to herd him upstairs just now, and it took me and my mother.  Every time I cut him off he'd whimper and scamper the other way.

Hopefully we'll do some good things for him while he's here, but I hate what's been done to him.  Even when he goes back to Allison, he'll just be going right back to a concrete run instead of a house; he's never been outside on his own, never been inside a house, and he doesn't know what the hell to do with any dog toys that we have.  I think it's almost more cruel to give him a taste of this sort of life and then just send him back.

Mmph.  It's so hard to watch him like this.  The second he gets onto a lead he shakes like a leaf.  He backed away from me before with such desperation that he cracked his head on the door behind him, then stared at me with big 'OMG NO HURT ME PLZ D8 D8 D8' eyes.

I'll get some pictures later now.

Major, major explosion at home.

As in: No Moar Internets Evar, and also 'maybe I should just not pay for your college anymore', 'I might just stop paying for your groceries', and 'maybe you should live somewhere else'.

I will be sparse online at best, if at all.  Hopefully I can convince my mother to stop being a dick.

Once again, I cannot stop crying because of RAEG.  I hate my life.  Seriously.  I hate it.

And as always, what the hell, Bob is the only reasonable one in the house out of the three of us.

Whether or not anyone here is aware of it, I'm an enormous fan of The Offspring (and have been since I first heard the Americana album). I picked up Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace from work today. What I have to say is this:

Worth.

The.

Wait.

The first and third tracks in particular I particularly recommend - Half-Truism and You're Gonna Go Far, Kid respectively.

...

Now dance, fucker, dance
Man I never had a chance
And no one even knew

Drake had a vet appointment today.  I asked if I should be going along and my mother pretty much bulldozed and said 'no', because according to Bob 'nothing would be happening'.

Except, y'know.

They put him down.

It's not unexpected, but it's exactly what I was afraid of.  I didn't think he'd come back from another vet visit, but the Bastard said that he'd call before anything happened.  As it turns out he didn't.  That, and he left Drake alone when it actually happened after they gave the poor dog a sedative.

This after weeks and weeks of me saying 'I AM GOING TO BE THERE, AND I WILL NOT LET THIS DOG GO OUT ALONE'.

I'm so mad.

Fucking coward.
